Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems' Gas Turbines to Help Create 'Most Efficient' Combined-Cycle Plant in Mexico

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas, Inc. (MHPSA) will supply a new combined-cycle power plant in Mexico with its latest gas turbine technology.

MHPSA was chosen by the Spain-based Iberdrola SA to provide two M501J gas turbines and an accompanying steam turbine for the CFE Noreste power project in Escobedo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

The 850-MW combined-cycle plant will supply power to meet northeastern Mexico’s growing demand.  The project, expected online by July 2018, will be one of the largest and most efficient combined-cycle plants in Mexico upon completion.

Noreste will also be Mexico’s first power plant to feature the M501J, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) latest gas turbine technology.

“As the pioneer in Advanced Technology Gas Turbines (ATGT), the MHPS awarded and installed ATGT fleet is 53 percent larger than the total combined fleet of all other OEMs,” said David Walsh, MHPSA’s president and chief executive officer. “Iberdrola’s decision to select the M501J was strongly influenced by the sizable commercial fleet already in operation, along with the turbine’s unmatched reliability and efficiency. It will add significantly to that region’s ability to power current and future needs.”

MHPS has sold 41 J-Series gas turbines to date, with 17 turbines in commercial operation.  Ten units have surpassed 8,000 actual operating hours (AOH) while the MHPS fleet has accumulated more than 170,000 AOH since commercialization of the J-Series began in 2013.
