Australia May Build Westinghouse AP1000 Nuclear Reactor

Westinghouse Electric Co. signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with several companies to bring Australian suppliers into Westinghouse’s nuclear global supply chain.
The MOUs with UGL Limited, Saab Australia Pty Ltd. and Teralba Industries also set the stage for these companies to gain experience and skills necessary for nuclear power to be developed in Australia should the country decides to go that route.
Saab Australia has experience in delivering integrated communications, security and incident management systems for critical infrastructure, and advanced training systems and processes to security and emergency response personnel for U.S. nuclear facilities. Teralba performs work for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. UGL has performed maintenance and capital work in relation to uranium mining in south Australia.
Australia generates 86 percent of its electricity from fossil fuels, and has the world’s largest uranium deposits with 31 percent of the world’s total. Australia does not have any nuclear power facilities, but in 2015, the South Australian government set up a South Australia Nuclear Fuel cycle Royal Commission to look into the potential for nuclear power in the country.
