2 Nuclear Power Plants in Sweden to Close Early

Sweden-based OKG announced it would shut down two units at the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant prematurely while continuing operations at the newer Unit 3.

Sweden-based OKG announced it would shut down two units at the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant prematurely while continuing operations at the newer Unit 3.

OKG’s majority owner, E.ON, made the decision to halt any future investments in the 661-MW Unit 2 and will not restart the reactor. Operation of the 492-MW Unit 1 will continue in accordance with the company’s plan until the time schedule for decommissioning is prepared. The exact shut down date has not yet been established.

“This is naturally a tremendously sad decision for me as well as for our employees,” said Johan Svenningsson, managing director of OKG. “Any immediate dismissal notices due to the decision on the shutdown are not considered necessary in the short term, but planning has been initiated regarding adjusting the organisation based on the conditions that we now have to adapt to.”

The 1,450-MW Unit 3 will continue operations until 2045. OKG said the decision to close the units is based on continuously low electricity rates, the increase of the nuclear capacity tax and additional requirements on extensive investments.
