Xcel Energy, a major U.S. electricity and natural gas company, has become the first utility in the country to register nearly a decade’s worth of greenhouse gas emissions data with The Climate Registry.

The company pledged to begin reducing emissions in 2005, according to Xcel Energy Vice President Frank Prager.  In the years since, the utility has seen more than a 20-percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and is on track to achieve a 30-percent reduction companywide by 2020.

“As a founding member of The Climate Registry, we contributed significant expertise and helped develop the protocol for counting emissions in the electric power sector, which ultimately helped us verify that we are meeting our goals,” said Prager.

Xcel Energy reached Climate Registered status by measuring and reporting the company’s emissions from 2005 to 2011.  The data was then verified by a third party.

The company’s emissions from 2012 to 2014 are currently being verified and registered with The Climate Registry, a nonprofit organization that operates voluntary and compliance greenhouse gas reporting programs throughout the world.

Xcel Energy services 3.5 million electricity customers and 2 million natural gas customers in eight Western and Midwestern states.
