Westinghouse product doubles nuclear pump part life

Westinghouse Electric O-ring doubles coolant pump life

Westinghouse Electric Co. announced a product designed to double the life of certain nuclear reactor coolant pump parts.

Westinghouse announced a new Compund D – Extended Life O-ring for Westinghouse-designed reactor coolant pump (RCP) seals, which uses materials that has been tested and fully qualified to double O-ring operation from six to 12 years under regular plant operating conditions, a release said. Utilities using using this product will reportedly not have to perform O-ring replacement at the six-year point, and can operate additional fuel cycles.

The compund will be available globally in fall 2015.
