The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp. (ENEC) and its main contractor, Korea Electric Power Co., signed AED 9.15 billion ($2.5 billion) worth of contracts with companies based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to help build the nation’s first nuclear power plants.

More than 1,100 UAE companies were contracted over five years to deliver products and services at the site of the Barakah nuclear power plant. Some of the companies include Emirates Steel, National Cement, Dubai Cable Co., National Marine Dredging Co., Western Bainoona Group and Hilalco.

Construction of the four-unit, 5,600-MW Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is underway. Unit 1 is more than 74 percent complete as of July 2015, and construction of units 1 through 4 is collectively 48 percent complete. Unit 1 is scheduled for operation in 2017 with each subsequent unit coming online in yearly intervals. The final unit is set for operation in 2020.
