Shut down nuclear power unit dismantled

EnergySolutions completed the first large commercial nuclear reactor segmentation in the U.S.

ZionSolutions LLC, a subsidiary of EnergySolutions, completed the segmentation of Unit 2 at the Zion Station in Illinois. The cutting process started May 26, 2015 with the final cut completed on June 26. The first 17 segments of the reactor vessel were cut with an oxy-propane torch connected to a robotic fixture external to the vessel. EnergySolutions also completed the transfer of spent nuclear fuel, Class B&C waste removal and vessel segmentation.

The Zion plant permanently shut down in January 1998. Unit 1 began operations in December 1973, and Unit 2 started operations in September 1974. Decommissioning began in September 2010 and is expected to take 10 years at a cost of $1 billion. The plant was converted into a grid voltage-stabilizing facility.
