Nuclear energy is key to U.S. energy future, senator says

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said nuclear energy will be a key in the future of U.S. energy.

Murkowski told an audience at the Nuclear Energy Institute’s annual conference that nuclear energy has all the attributes she is looking for as she prepares to draft new comprehensive energy legislation.

“I believe that energy should be abundant, affordable, clean, diverse and secure. And I believe that the future of the nuclear industry is bright because it checks all of those boxes,” Murkowski said.

Murkowski said it is important that the regulatory processes for licensing nuclear power plants be more efficient and effective, and said energy legislation could be beneficial. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan has been criticized for not valuing nuclear energy more. She also called for reform of the federal government’s nuclear waste management program. Murkowski said she backs the Nuclear Waste Administration Act along with Sens. Lamar Alexander, Maria Cantwell and Dianne Feinstein. Sen. Alexander recently announced a series of year-long hearings in which the Senate Appropriation Subcommittee on Energy & Water Development would look into the future of U.S. nuclear.

Murkowski also emphasized her support for new forms of nuclear energy.

“I have long supported and advocated for the development and employment of small modular reactors,” Murkowski said.
