 Start of S. Korea nuclear reactor delayed after flaws found

South Korea’s nuclear regulator said it would delay the start of a nuclear reactor after flawed valves were discovered.
 
The 1,400-MW Shin-Kori 3 power plant in Ulsan began a test run in November, but a deadly nitrogen gas leak in late December put the start on hold for a month. The incident killed three workers, according to Yonhap News. The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) postponed a decision on whether to allow the unit to start again after reactor developer General Electric (GE, NYSE: GE) notified plant operator Korea Hydro & Electric Power (KHNP) of plans to recall plugs that control heat in the valve. The reactor is 99 percent completed and is expected to begin operations in June, but GE’s recall process may take five to six months, the article said.
 
The Shin-Kori 3 project is the reference model for the Korean-designed APR 1400 advanced light water reactor. Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) exported the reactor technology to the United Arab Emriates in 2009, the article said. KEPCO made an agreement with the UAE that the Shin-Kori 3 would reach commercial operations in September to prove it is operational. If that is delayed, KEPCO may have to pay fines.
