Nuclear engineering company to build first U.S. pebble bed reactor

Maryland-based X-energy said it will be the first manufacturer of pebble fuel in the U.S. for use in its nuclear reactor.
The nuclear engineering company recently convened a group of nuclear experts to discuss best practices in pebble fuel fabrication. The experts range from pebble-bed projects around the world, including the AVR and HTGR reactors in West Germany, the PBMR in South Africa, and the HTR-10 currently in operation in China.
X-energy will use the elements to fuel their 50-MW Xe-100 gas-cooled nuclear reactor by the mid-2020s.
