Coal-fired power plant to close April 15

Georgia Power's coal-fired Plant Hatch to close Wednesday

Georgia Power said its coal-fired Plant Branch will close for good before an April 16th deadline.

The subsidiary of Southern Co. (NYSE: SO) said the plant would close permanently before the date to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standard, according to WMAZ. A plant spokesperson was quoted as saying upgrades to keep the plant open cost too much. The plant will be demolished after it closes.

Plant Branch reportedly had 229 employees when closing was first announced in January 2013, but most have either retired or transferred to other facilities.
