Florida Power & Light Co. (FPL) unveiled its new Power Delivery Diagnostic Center — designed to advance smart grid technology — to manage the electric system more efficiently while delivering reliable service.
“The electric grid, which was designed and built across the United States many years ago, has remained largely unchanged for decades,” said Manny Miranda, vice president of Power Delivery for FPL. “During the past few years, however, we’ve made – and we continue to make – significant improvements by integrating advanced technology to make the grid much stronger and smarter. Through innovative solutions such as this diagnostic center, we have greater awareness of the performance of FPL’s grid, one of the most advanced systems in the nation, enabling us to improve reliability for our customers.”
FPL’s new center utilizes predictive analytics to deliver real-time data to engineers, who in turn, analyze the data to measure and improve the performance of the electric grid.
FPL began modernizing its system in 2010 with the installation of smart meters, funded partly by a $200 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). To date, the utility has invested an additional $600 million. FPL is also investing in digital microprocessor technology that provides real-time telemetry and fault information – allowing the company to identify and locate potential causes of outages in a more time-efficient manner.
Since 2010, FPL has increased its reliability by more than 20 percent, enabling customers to pay lower energy bills. In 2014, FPL smart meters delivered more than $30 million in operational savings; additional savings came from 17,000 fewer field visits.
For 2015, the company plans to complete smart meter deployment to its commercial and industrial customers, launch its meter enclosure alert service (MEAS), and deploy thousands of smart grid devices to further improve reliable service .
