 Siemens upgrades offshore wind turbine, increases capacity

Siemens’ (NYSE: SI) offshore wind turbine, the SWT-6.0-154, has reached a milestone for its gearless turbine design, increasing output capacity. The new design, SWT-7.0-154, has a 7-MW output capacity and delivers nearly ten percent more energy production than its predecessor. The new design includes a long, structural design lifetime of 25-years.

Development engineers refined the turbine components to increase electrical output and cost reduction by installing stronger permanent magnets and generator segments; the converter and transformer were also upgraded.

"Our new wind turbine offers our customers an investment as reliable as our proven G4 and D6 product platforms,” said Michael Hannibal, chief executive officer (CEO) for Siemens Wind Power and Renewables, Offshore. "Yet it also answers market demands to achieve greater energy yield at lower cost and effort.”

The new model, sold under the D7 product platform, is set for series production by 2017.
