Video: GE Hitachi Nuclear reveals tool for nuclear power uncoupling

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Exelon Generation (NYSE: EXC) introduced a remotely-operated tool that allows workers to complete tasks at the bottom of nuclear reactors.
 
The battery-powered, wireless tool remotely disconnects, or uncouples, control rods from their associated blades at the bottom of the reactor during maintenance. It replaces a more labor-intensive process involving floor jacks and the removal of large quantities of steel plates.
 
The device has been shown to reduce radiation dose by as much as 60 percent. It has been used during recent maintenance work at Exelon’s Dresden nuclear power plant in Illinois and the Peach Bottom nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. A total of 19 drives were uncoupled at Peach Bottom, and 25 were uncoupled at Dresden.
