Kurion robot to plug leaks at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor

Kurion Inc. will develop an advanced robotic arm to repair containment leaks at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
 
The company signed the contract with IHI Corp. to begin building the robotic system, the Fukushima Repair Manipulator (FRM), to be deployed in mid-2016. The FRM is tasked with plugging leaks in Unit 2 caused by the earthquake and tsunami that damaged the plant in 2011.
 
The system is the second phase of the reactor primary containment leak discovery and repair efforts. The first phase consisted of the development and delivery of the Fukushima Inspection Manipulator (FIM), a robotic system that searched for the causes of the leaks. The FIM deployed three remotely operated vehicles to identify cracks in the primary containment vessel, vent tubes and torus in the reactor building. The FIM is inspecting an additional seven locations in the reactor building and is expected to complete inspections this year.
 
Once the leaks are plugged, workers will be able to remove fuel and debris from the damaged reactor.
