DOE extends funding for light water reactor research consortium

DOE CASL LWR light water reactor research and development consortium

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $121.5 million funding renewal for the Consortium for the Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL).

CASL is an Energy Innovation Hub located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. It was established in 2010 to develop advanced computing capabilities that serve as a virtual version of existing, operating nuclear reactors. The hub would receive up to $121.5 million over five years, subject to congressional appropriations. CASL researchers over the next five years will focus on extending the modeling and simulation tools built during the first phase to include additional nuclear reactor designs such as small modular reactors.

CASL in its first five years has demonstrated progress in modeling and simulation tools and applying them to the current generation of nuclear reactors. CASL researchers also created methods for the interoperation of software that simulates many physical behaviors found in reactors, improving the accuracy of simulation results.
