Volkswagen begins operations at biggest U.S. auto factory solar installation

Volkswagen has officially opened its Volkswagen Chattanooga Solar Park, the largest single solar installation at an automobile factory in the United States and the biggest solar installation in the state of Tennessee.

The park, which is expected to produce 13.1 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, is owned by Silicon Ranch, which will own the solar park and sell the electricity to Volkswagen under a 20-year power purchase agreement. Phoenix Solar Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Phoenix Solar AG, provided engineering, procurement and construction services for the solar park.

The park uses 33,600 solar modules from JA Solar and covers 33 acres of land. The power produced by the solar park is expected to meet 12.5 percent of the of the plant’s energy needs during full production and fully power the plant during non-production periods.
