Sherburne County coal-fired Unit 3 returning to service soon

Sherburne County Generating Station Sherco Minnesota Public Utilities Commission Unit 3 coal-fired Xcel Energy

Xcel Energy Inc. (NYSE: XEL) has told the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission that Unit 3 at the coal-fired Sherburne County Generating Station will return to service before Sept. 30, according to a report from Reuters.

In a letter to the commission obtained by Reuters, Xcel said that restoration work on the 860-MW unit, called Sherco 3, is complete. The company said it is currently performing preoperational checks and anticipates initial grid synchronization to occur this week.

The unit shut in November 2011 because of extensive turbine damage. Xcel has stated that burning coal remains the most economical option at the 2,400 MW power plant until there is a greater cost for emitting carbon.
