Westar receives Kansas transmission route approval

Westar Energy transmission Kansas Corporation Commission Summit Substation ITC Great Plains Mid-Kansas

The Kansas Corporation Commission has approved the route for a Westar Energy Inc. (NYSE: WR) transmission project that Westar says will improve electric reliability and efficiency in central Kansas.

The company is planning to build a 345 kV transmission line that will connect the Summit Substation about five miles northeast of Assaria to the Elm Creek substation about four miles northwest of Aurora. Westar will construct and own the southern half of the line, and ITC Great Plains and Mid-Kansas will construct and co-own the northern half of the line.

Westar’s costs for the project, including improvements to the Summit substation, are estimated at $66 million. The project is set to be completed in late 2016.
