A new report says the U.S. has the greatest number of wind turbine technology patent filings in the world, according to California-based consulting firm Totaro & Associates.
Around the world, the entire wind industry has spent $430 million for protection on more than 32,800 patent filings to date, the report said. Companies in the U.S. have collectively spent more than $143 million on intellectual property (IP) landscape, with Europe second at $112 million and more than 5,100 filings and China third at $44 million with more than 3,700 filings.
GE (NYSE: GE) leads with 1,300 patent families, with Vestas, Siemens (NYSE: SI), Mitsubishi and Sinovel rounding out the top five. The report also said that the top 10 wind turbine manufacturers have more than 54 percent of all the wind patent filings, as well as more than 80 percent of the patents which are broadly applicable to the entire industry or potentially infringed.
