NRC investigating death at nuclear power plant

Dominion Millstone nuclear power plant Connecticut worker found unresponsive pronounced dead Day & Zimmermann Nuclear Regulatory Commission NRC

A worker was found unresponsive in a stairwell at the Millstone nuclear power plant in Connecticut.

Plant operator Dominion (NYSE: D) said in the afternoon of August 22, the contract worker was found at the bottom of a staircase in the plant’s condensate polishing facility, a non-radiological part of the plant. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The worker was employed by Day & Zimmermann. The company said they are not releasing personal information about her.

"First of all, our greatest sympathies go out to the family and we are keeping them in our thoughts during this difficult time," said Sharon Ferruccio, Director of Marketing and Communications with Day & Zimmermann. "At this point, we're doing all we can to learn the details of exactly what happened, although this does not appear to be an industrial accident. We'll continue to work closely with all of the proper authorities and officials and assist in any way we can."

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is investigating the cause of death, but it does not appear to be related to industrial work activities, nor was she contaminated.
