Illinois EPA believes closed coal-fired plant polluting groundwater

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency believes ash ponds at the closed coal-fired Vermilion Power Station may be leaching contaminates into the ground water, according to a report from the News-Gazette in Champaign, Ill.

A spokesman for the agency told the News-Gazette that agency officials believe that one or two of the ash ponds at the facility are spreading contaminants that could leach into surface water. Dynegy, which shut down the plant more than two years ago, stated in its quarterly report to the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission earlier this summer that hydrogeologic investigations have shown the coal-ash impoundments are affecting groundwater in the area. According to the report, two of the impoundments “impact groundwater quality onsite and that such groundwater migrates off-site to the north of the property and to the adjacent Middle Fork of the Vermilion River.”

Dynegy submitted a corrective action plan to the IEPA, but the agency asked the company to reconsider parts of the plan. The company will resubmit a plan in November, according to the News-Gazette.

The agency could approve the plan or seek modifications based on the resubmitted plan, The News-Gazette stated.
