Ameren receives approval for $1.1bn transmission project in Illinois

Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois ATXI approved for transmission lines Illinois Commerce Commission Illinois Rivers transmission project Federal Regulatory Energy Commission FERC

Ameren Transmission Co. of Illinois (ATXI) has received approval from the Illinois Commerce Commission to build its $1.1 billion Illinois Rivers transmission project. The new 345 kV line will span nearly 400 miles, crossing the Mississippi River near Quincy, Ill. and continuing east across the state to the Indiana border.

According to the company, the project is the largest transmission project in the corporation’s history and the largest single investment by the corporation since the early 1980s.

The ICC granted a certificate of public convenience and necessity for seven of the nin proposed segments on the route and three of the nine proposed bulk substations, noting that the remaining two segments were not approved because of a lack of time and evidence to determine the most cost-effective route. ATXI said it is moving forward on the approved parts of the project and plans to request a rehearing to determine the appropriate routing of the two segments and the location and the need for the substations that were not approved.

The project has already received approvals from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator Inc. ATXI intends to begin right-of-way acquisitions for the approved portions of the project immediately with a full range of construction activities beginning in 2014.

ATXI is a subsidiary of Ameren Corp (NYSE: AEE).
