Groups to research hydraulic fracturing water treatment systems

Southern Research Institute hydraulic fracturing water treatment Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America

The Southern Research Institute - in partnership with the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America – will develop and demonstrate technologies that will treat water used in hydraulic fracturing. Southern Research also teamed up with M2 Water Treatment Inc. of North Carolina and BKT United from California to conduct the research.

The two-year project will develop technologies that address issues related to processes and methods for handling and disposal of large volumes of hydraulic fracturing flow-back water, as well as water produced during the longer-term production phase. The program will use two technologies for hydraulic fracturing and two for the treatment and disposal of residues, such as high solid slurry and membrane concentrate, from drilling water treatment.
