Legislators press Moniz on Paducah uranium site closing

Ernest Moniz asked about Paducah uranium enrichment site Kentucky Mitch McConnell Rand Paul Ed Whitfield

Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, and Congressman Ed Whitfield met Tuesday with newly minted Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz to discuss the future of the Paducah uranium enrichment facility.

Plant operator USEC chose to close the facility, the only America-owned uranium enrichment plant in operation, after the DOE earlier this year opted to discontinue an arrangement under which the federal government was subsidizing the plant.

“The Department of Energy must act quickly to maximize long term job retention and job growth in Paducah, and we will continue to do all we can to ensure that happens,” said the legislators in a prepared statement.
