WPL approved to install emissions controls at coal-fired unit

Wisconsin Power & Light Co. (WPL) a subsidiary of Alliant Energy (NYSE: LNT), said it received oral approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to install additional emission control technology at Unit 5 of the Edgewater Generating Station in Wisconsin for $410 million.

The approval allows WPL to install a scrubber and baghouse system, which will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from Unit 5 by approximately 90 percent and could also reduce particulate matter emissions. A written order from regulators is necessary before work can begin.

APL expects to begin construction in 2014 and complete it by 2016.
