Retrofit of natural gas fired boilers reduces NOx emissions

Nationwide Boiler Inc. completed the retrofit of two natural gas-fired boilers with a common ammonia-free CataStak selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system at the NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG) Center in California. The center supplies district heating to buildings in a 2-square-mile area of the central business district of San Francisco.

The SCR system uses a urea injection system from Combustion Components Associates Inc. Testing of the system reported NOx emission limits of 1 ppm NOx and ammonia slip (NH3) of less than 1 ppm NOx, exceeding the NOx emission permit requirement by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
