GE, Vestas tie as leading wind turbine maker

Ge Vestas tied as leading wind turbine manufacturer Bloomberg New Energy Finance

GE (NYSE: GE) and Vestas Wind Systems A/S tied as the leading global wind turbine producer, according to a report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The tie marks the first time in 12 years Vestas has not been the leading producer of wind turbines.

According to the report, the two companies each supplied about 5.7 GW of wind turbine capacity in 2012, with less than 50 MW separating the total from each company. Siemens AG (NYSE: SI) placed third, followed by Enercon GmbH in fourth and Suzlon Energy Ltd. in fifth.

Part of GE’s rise may be attributable to a tax incentive that drove 13.6 GW of wind power installations in the U.S., where the company commissioned 96 percent of its turbines, Bloomberg stated. Vestas sold 40 percent of its turbines in the U.S. According to Bloomberg, installations in the U.S. will plunge to 2.8 GW this year.

Bloomberg predicts that Vestas will most likely regain sole possessions as the leading wind turbine producer over GE as the U.S. market shrinks.
