Alstom to provide equipment for Florida natural gas fired power plant

Polk Power Station Florida TECO Tampa Electric Alstom steam generator turbine

Tampa Electric has selected Alstom to provide a new steam turbine generator set for its Polk Power Station in Florida. The set will include an Alstom STF60C steam turbine and Gigatop generator and increase the plant’s output by about 500 MW, according to a release from Alstom.

The package is expected to come online at the natural gas-fired plant in 2017. In order to provide for an expected increase in electricity demand in the Tampa area over the next five years, Tampa Electric received approval from Florida regulators last year to convert three of the station’s simple cycle gas turbine power generation to a four-on-one combined cycle configuration.

The Polk Power Station is located about 40 miles southeast of Tampa, Fla. and produces enough electricity to serve 75,000 homes. Including this contract, Alstom has provided boilers, heat recovery steam generators or steam turbine generators for three of Tampa Electric’s four power stations.
