Westinghouse Springfields plant completes first nuclear fuel delivery to EDF

Westinghouse Electric Co.’s nuclear fuel fabrication facility at Springfields in Lancashire, UK, has completed its first delivery of light water reactor (LWR) fuel assemblies to the French energy firm Electricité de France (EDF).

The first fuel assemblies were dispatched to EDF’s Gravelines 5 power station in Northern France. The delivery is the culmination of an extensive product qualification exercise to ensure the manufacturing plant at Springfields meets EDF’s quality and production standards.

“We are naturally delighted that the first delivery of LWR fuel for EDF in France has been completed,” said Mick Gornall, Westinghouse Springfields site operations director. “This is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work and support by many people at Springfields to ensure that the product qualification was approved by EDF.”

Springfields has previously exported finished nuclear fuel around the world but this marks the first time LWR fuel has been exported to France or supplied to EDF. Springfields currently supplies EDF with all of the fuel for the firm’s advanced gas-cooled reactors in the UK.
