Study shows strong support for nuclear power in UAE

Global research firm TNS announced today survey results showing growing public support for nuclear power in the United Arab Emirates.

The poll revealed a sharp increase in support for nuclear energy, from 66 percent a year ago to 82 percent today. According to TNS, Emiratis associated nuclear energy in the UAE with phrases like “better power supply” and “cost-effective.” The study also indicated an increased awareness of nuclear power in the UAE, up 13 percent from 2011.

The survey results will be a boon for the UAE’s nascent nuclear energy program, which is committed to building four nuclear plants by 2020 as the emirates seek to diversify their energy mix away from a heavy reliance on natural gas and oil, which are needed for export.
