Sempra announces start of construction for new solar power project

Sempra U.S. Gas & Power announced the beginning of construction for its largest solar project last week. The project, which is named Copper Mountain Solar 3 and will be located in Nevada, will be capable of generating 250 MW and will be completed in 2015.

The company made the announcement during the dedication of Copper Mountain Solar 2, one of North America’s largest photovoltaic solar plants. Copper Mountain Solar 2, which began construction in December 2011, has finished its first phase of 92 MW of capacity and will have a total capacity of 150 MW when its second phase is completed in 2015.

The three facilities that comprise the Copper Mountain Solar complex will represent one of the largest solar power complexes in the U.S. when completed, according to Sempra. The three facilities combined will be capable of generating about 458 MW of power.
