ABB upgrades turbine control at Dominion coal-fired power plant

ABB announced Tuesday it has successfully commissioned a Symphony turbine control upgrade at Dominion (NYSE: D)’s coal-fired Mecklenburg Power Station in Virginia.

The company stated in a release it replaced the existing control system at the 2x69 MW coal-fired plant with a Symphony solution that would better handle the current operating environment and address plant concerns. Although the units were originally designed as base load, cogeneration units, the cogeneration aspect is now gone and the units are deployed as corner units that operate between moderate and peaking load.

ABB stated the solution combined multiple aspects into a single control system, including automatic start-up, automatic synchronization, automatic valve calibration, speed control, runback logic, load control, isochronous control, overspeed testing and vibration monitoring.
