UK nuclear power plant shut down due to maintenance issue

Magnox Ltd. said Unit 1 at the Wylfa nuclear power plant in Wales was taken offline Sept. 30 following difficulties encountered during routine refueling operations.

Magnox said investigations are underway to identify the nature and cause of the problems. The company did not estimate as to when the unit will return to service.

The Wylfa site has two Magnox nuclear reactors and four turbine generators. The plant generates more than 40 percent of Wales' electricity needs.
