Areva to supply safety equipment for Japanese nuclear reactors

Areva will equip all of the Japanese pressurized water reactor (PWR) fleet with more than a hundred of its Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners (PARs), the company said on Oct. 18.

PARs are passive safety devices used to prevent the build-up of hydrogen into reactor containment vessels so to preserve the integrity of the reactor, Areva said.

PARs do not require any operator intervention or power. They continue to work even in the case of a station blackout.
