Nuclear power plant enters refueling and maintenance outage

Southern Co. (NYSE: SO) said plant operators of the 1,776 MW Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant in Alabama took Unit 1 offline on April 1 for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage. The last refueling outage for Unit 1 was completed in fall 2010.

Aside from refueling the reactor and performing regular maintenance and testing, workers also will perform upgrades to the plant systems and components.  Each unit at Plant Farley requires refueling every 18 months.

Plant Farley Unit 2 will continue to operate while Unit 1 is offline and refueling.
