MC Industrial awarded $22.5 mn contract for Westar Energy construction project

MC Industrial, an independent McCarthy company, is completing a $22.5 million construction project for Westar Energy’s coal-fired Jeffrey Energy Center in St. Marys, Kan. The project includes modifying the flue gas duct work and supporting structure to support the future installation of a selective catalytic reduction unit (SCR) system on one of three operating units.

Work includes pre-assembly and installation of 770 tons of ductwork, with over 25,000 linear feet of welding, to replace the existing duct work; 170 tons of structural modifications to support new duct work; and reinforcement of the boiler to handle new operating pressures. The installation of the new duct work system requires new and relocated electrical and piping systems. The project also includes replacement of the existing economizer hopper section of the boiler backpass. The project  is scheduled to complete by May 2012.  Burns & McDonnell is the engineer and construction manager for this project.
