Wind project in North Dakota begins operations

Minnesota Power, a unit of Allete Inc. (NYSE: ALE) commissioned the 82 MW capacity Bison 1 wind farm in North Dakota Feb. 6.

The Bison 1 wind farm uses 15 Siemens (NYSE: SI) 3 MW turbines with direct drive power units. The project was completed in two phases, with Bison 1A beginning operations in 2011.

Minnesota Power continues work on the Bison 2 and Bison 3 wind projects, adjacent to the Bison 1 farm. Bison 2 and 3 will both use 35 Siemens 3 MW wind turbines for 210 MW of wind capacity. The total Bison wind farm is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
