Hydroelectric power plant to be modernized by Eaton Corp.

Eaton Corp. (NYSE: ETN) received a nine-year, $10.9 million contract from the New York Power Authority’s board of trustees to modernize and extend the life of the Niagara Power Project’s Lewiston Pump Generating Plant.

The agreement includes the design, manufacturing, delivery, installation and commission of 12 unit control boards and governor controls for the pumped storage plant. Eaton will replace the original electro-mechanical devices with modern digital technology and will also upgrade the unit governing system and replace the plant’s unit protective relaying system.

The project is part of NYPA’s $460 million Life Extension and Modernization program for the facility announced in 2010. The modernization project is expected to be completed in 2020.

The Lewiston plant works as a generator during the day when electricity demand is higher and as pumps at night when demand is low. It is part of the Niagara Power Project, which also includes the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant.
