Transmission upgrade in Quebec to be performed by ABB

ABB won a $50 million order from Hydro Québec to upgrade vital components of the utility’s ultra-high voltage transmission system that helps transport hydroelectric power from north to south Quebec.

The two static var compensators (SVC) in the Nemiscau substation near Montreal provide reactive power compensation in the 735 kV electricity network. The upgrades are scheduled to be completed by 2014.

SVCs are made to compensate for fluctuations in the voltage and current of an electric grid, allowing more power to flow through the network while maintaining network safety and stability.
