Nuclear reactor refurbishment contract signed with AECL

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) signed a contract for C$440 million ($446.3 million) with Nucleoeléctrica Argentina Sociedad Anónima to refurbish and retube the 648 MWe Unit 6 Candu nuclear reactor at the Embalse nuclear power plant.

The contract scope includes key technologies and tools to support the retubing project as well as engineering and supply for plant upgrades. The Argentine nuclear entity will be the project manager and will carry out all procurement and oversee the on-site work.

AECL will execute the contract with direct support from SNC-Lavalin Nuclear Inc. until Candu Energy Inc. completes theacquisition of the commercial assets of AECL’s Candu Reactor Division. Once the deal is completed, Candu will take over full responsibility for the Argentine contract.

Unit 6 began commercial operation in January 1984.
