Wind energy request made by Xcel Energy

Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) filed for regulatory permission to add 200 MW of wind power to its Windsource program from a planned wind farm in Colorado.

The Public Service Co. of Colorado, a unit of Xcel, would buy the wind energy from NextEra Energy Resources LLC, which plans to install new turbines at the Limon Wind Energy Center II project.

The city of Boulder was offered to buy the electricity as part of franchise negotiations, but instead asked city voters if they want to start a municipal utility instead of renewing the franchise agreement with Xcel.

If approved by the PUC, construction on the wind farm would start in early 2012 and be completed by the end of the year.
