Solar system marketed to offset EV charging load

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) and SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWRA, SPWRB) will offer a rooftop solar system that will allow Focus Electric owners to offset electricity used to charge the vehicle.

Focus Electric owners can install a 2.5 kW SunPower rooftop solar system for around $10,000 to offset the electricity needed to charge the vehicle at night.

The system uses SunPower E18 series solar panels, which can produce around 3,000 kWh of electricity annually. The system is being marketed to accommodate a customer who drives around 1,000 miles a month. The system will also be compatible with the C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid electric vehicle Ford is rolling out in 2012.
