Solar energy farm receives Interior Dept. approval

The U.S. Interior Secretary August 10 approved a 550 MW solar energy farm that would be constructed on public-owned land.

The Desert Sunlight solar project was awarded a $1.88 billion conditional loan guarantee from the U.S. Energy Department in June. First Solar will supply the thin-film solar photovoltaic panels for the project.

Southern California Edison will buy the generated electricity through a power purchase agreement. First Solar said it is looking to sell the Desert Sunlight solar project when it is completed.
