Carbon capture and storage project begins construction

Construction began at an ethanol plant in Illinois that will demonstrate integrated carbon capture and storage (ICCS) technology.

The Illinois-ICCS project is designed to sequester approximately 2,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per day in the saline Mount Simon Sandstone formation at depths of 7,000 feet. Researchers estimate the formation can store more than 250 million tons of CO2 produced each year.

The CO2 will come from processing corn into fuel-grade ethanol at Archer Daniels Midland Co.’s (ADM) biofuels plant adjacent to the storage site.

In 2009, the DOE selected the ADM project team of Schlumberger Carbon Services, the Illinois State Geological Survey and Richland Community College to conduct one of 12 Phase I ICCS projects. DOE picked the project in June 2010 for additional Phase 2 funding. The demonstration project will receive $141.4 million in funding from ARRA and another $66.5 million in private sector cost sharing.

The project includes the design, construction and demonstration of a CO2 compression and dehydration facility.  Capture and storage is expected to begin in 2013.
