Biomass power plant to use Emerson digital control system

Foster Wheeler (NASDAQ: FWLT) will use Emerson Process Management’s PlantWeb digital plant architecture to control a 190 MWe biomass boiler at the Polaniec Power Station in Poland.

Foster Wheeler is building the biomass-fired circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boiler island for plant owner GDF Suez. As part of the order, Emerson will supply an Ovation system to handle 6,000 I/O, which includes Ovation SIS for boiler protection and burner management. Emerson will also supply automation services including complete project management, engineering and installation. Also included is Emerson’s AMS Suite, which is designed to speed configuration and commissioning of boiler instrumentation.

The boiler island and biomass handling plant will be built next to existing units at GDF Suez's 1,800 MW coal-fired power station. The biomass boiler capacity will increase from 190 to 205 MW after further modernization.

The boiler is expected to be operational in 2012 and will burn wood chips in combination with 20 percent of agricultural derived fuel such as straw, sunflower and fruit husk pellets.
