Nuclear Regulatory Commission names new director

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has announced the selection of Mark A. Satorius as Director of the Office of Federal and State Materials and Environmental Management Programs (FSME). He will assume his new duties in early October. He succeeds Charles L. Miller who is retiring.

Since 2009, Satorius has served as regional administrator, Region III in Lisle, Ill. His successor there will be named later.

In his new position, Satorius will oversee the office activities and the regulatory framework for the safe and secure use of nuclear materials, medical, industrial, academic and commercial applications, uranium recovery activities, low-level radioactive waste sites and the decommissioning of previously operating nuclear facilities and power plants. In addition, he will work with federal agencies, states, and tribal and local governments on regulatory matters.
