$1.3bn natural gas-fired power plant enters service

GDF Suez and International Power said that the $1.3 billion, 575 MW natural gas-fired Astoria Energy II plant in New York City began commercial operation on July 1. The second phase brings the total generating capacity of the project to 1,000 MW.

Astoria Energy II will sell the entire output to the New York Power Authority under a 20-year contract.
