Shaw awarded nuclear reactor services contract

The Shaw Group Inc. was awarded a contract by SMR LLC, a unit of Holtec International, to provide phase one engineering support services for a new 140 MW small modular nuclear power reactor, the Holtec Inherently Safe Modular Underground Reactor (HI-SMUR).

Shaw will develop the conceptual design of the balance of plant and support systems to move the reactor toward eventual commercial application. Shaw also will prepare an overall design basis, support licensing activities and evaluate plant layouts and optimization of plant output.

The undisclosed value of the contract will be included in Shaw's Power segment's backlog of unfilled orders in the third quarter of fiscal year 2011.

Shaw also provides design services for facilities using Holtec’s spent fuel casks at nuclear operating plants in the United States. These caskss allow nuclear plant operators to store spent fuel onsite in air-cooled casks and not in fuel pools.
