Japanese investors join wind energy project

Itochu Corp. and Sumitomo Corp. invested about 17 billion yen (US$20.5 million) each in the 845 MW Shepherds Flat wind farm in Oregon.

The two companies say they are trying to seize new business opportunities in the wake of the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The companies will gain concessions from a unit of General Electric Co. to build the wind project. It is expected to come online in 2012.
